Rev. Dr. Elzie Young
Rev. Dr. Elzie Young Pastored New Progressive Missionary Baptist Church for 37 years. On January 22, 1961 Rev. Young was elected as the Pastor of New Progressive Missionary Baptist Church. Under his leadership he encouraged members to grow in their spiritual lives by applying the word of God to real life situations. The church grew under his leadership.
Under his administration in 1983 New Progressive Missionary Baptist Church opened a christian academy; which lead to the education of children in and out of our local assembly. When the doors opened, there were 22 students enrolled. The New Progressive Christian academy lasted 17 years.
During his tenure as Pastor, in the 1980's Rev. Young held both posts as the President of the Baptist State Convention of Illinois for 4 years, and the moderator of the Bethlehem District.
Dr. Young was known for preaching sound doctrine, being fiscally responsible, and a decisive leader. Through his leadership ministries were consistently left in better condition. There was never a question of his love for God's people, as he lead with the heart of a Shepard, and with the love of Christ. It is in Dr. Young's name that we continue to remember his legacy with the creation of the Dr. Elzie Young Scholarship Foundation.
