The History of New Progressive Missionary Baptist Church

Picture
The New Progressive Baptist Church was organized November 3, 1957 in the Englewood Community House located at 6224 S. Princeton Ave. in Chicago, IL by the late Rev. Samuel W Wyatt.

On January 12, 1958 the church moved to 60 E. 93rd street, where we shared a building with the West Chesterfield Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastored Rev. Albert Turner.

New Progressive moved to a storefront at 9401 S. Perry on March 1, 1959. Early in 1959, Rev. Wyatt became ill and in August of 1960, he died. Rev. David C Barnes, his assistant minister, continued to serve as pastor until January 22, 1961.

On January 28, 1961 the Reverend Elzie Young was called to pastor New Progressive Baptist Church. Rev. Young presented his long-range program for the up building of the church: spiritually, numerically, and financially. The church accepted Rev. Young’s program and began to work faithfully to carry it out.

The church was registered in 1961 with the State of Illinois as an organization. After the church was officially organized, it was named New Progressive Missionary Baptist Church. Each member of the church helped to conduct a membership drive by passing out flyers in the community to friends and neighbors inviting them to worship at New Progressive.

In 1963, New Progressive bought a house and moved to 9400 S. Perry. The house was renovated. In the fall of 1966, New Progressive began building a church on the lot next to the church. By spring of 1967, the big move took place. By 1972 New Progressive had outgrown the new church and additions were made.

From 1983-1999, the New Progressive Christian Academy was established. The Academy taught grades one through eight. A new annex on the south parking lot housed classrooms, and offices, as well as an extension of the basement auditorium.

A board of Christian education was established in 1986. Its purpose was to plan and give direction to the educational activities of the church. Also, in 1986 the New convert class was established for persons that united with the church.

In 1993 Rev. Dr. Elzie Young was honored with an honorary street sign on the corner of 9400 and Perry. The youth choir was also established during the same year. New Progressive has grown from the tiny acorn to a tall oak. Growing from a membership of 14 to over a 1,000 with a Sunday school attendance from 9 to 300. Our church owns several lots and is debt free and self-sufficient.

Praise the Lord from whom all blessings flow!

In 1998, after 37 years of service, Rev. Dr. Elzie Young retired and passed the torch to Rev. Herbert Lee, Jr. It was then Rev. Lee accepted the call to pastor New Progressive Missionary Baptist Church.

What We Believe

Picture
The Bible
We believe the entire Bible is inspired by God, without error and the authority on which we base our faith, conduct and doctrine.

The Trinity
We believe in one God who exists in three distinct persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came to this earth as Savior of the world.

Salvation
We believe Jesus died on the cross and shed His blood for our sins. We believe that salvation is found by placing our faith in what Jesus did for us on the cross. We believe Jesus rose from the dead and is coming again.

Water Baptism
We believe water baptism is a symbol of the cleansing power of the blood of Christ and a testimony to our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Communion
in the regular taking of Communion as an act of remembering what the Lord Jesus did for us on the cross.

Growing Relationship
We believe every believer should be in a growing relationship with Jesus by obeying God's Word, yielding to the Holy Spirit and by being conformed to the image of Christ.
